Description: The Disability Inclusion Virtual Workshop, led by the Training & Education Department at Abilities Centre, provides participants with the platform to reflect on their own journey of inclusion by analyzing personal and unconscious biases and assumptions related to disability and the ability of individuals with disabilities to participate in programs, services, and activities.

The workshop provides an introductory knowledge of Disability Inclusion and highlights best practices for breaking down stigma related to disability. Individuals will take away tangible learnings that can be incorporated into both professional and personal lives. This workshop is designed to generate conversation, share examples/experiences, and to increase participants’ understanding of how they can contribute to their organization’s journey towards a more inclusive society. Topics such as language, assumption and bias, models of disability, etc. will be covered.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Identify key models of disability.
  • Identify and distinguish between key terms and practices related to inclusion, diversity, accessibility and universal design.
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of transactional change and transformational change as it relates to inclusion and accessibility.
  • Distinguish between person first language and identity first language and the role language plays in disability inclusion.
