Inclusion & Accessibility

  • How do you define inclusion?
The definition of inclusion is: “To encourage people of all abilities to engage in meaningful participation together in an environment which fosters a sense of belongingness and autonomy” (Active Living Alliance).

  • How do you define accessibility?
There are many different theories and models related to disability and inclusion. You may be familiar with the medical model of disability, which takes a divisive approach, applying a label to the person and focusing on “fixing” the person.

The social model of disability focuses on the barriers that impede people. These could be systemic barriers, negative attitudes, or exclusion by society (purposely or inadvertently).
