Therapeutic Recreation in Summer, now in its 4th year, is the collaborative effort of Abilities Centre and Durham District/Durham Catholic District School Boards.
Recognizing some skills built during the school year may be lost over the summer months (routine, transitions, and the like) the partnership looked to create a fun and memorable program to maintain this progress while bridging the gap between June and an August/September school restart. Abilities Centre Therapeutic Recreation Specialists, TR Assistants, Teachers in Training, and Educational Assistants come together to provide engaging activities spanning all interests; physical literacy-related activities, outdoor exploration, creative arts, and socialization activities encompassing teamwork and collaboration.
Registrants must be current (or imminent beginning in August/September 2025) Durham District School Board OR Durham Catholic District School Board high school students belonging to a Practical Learning Program (PLP) or Learning and Life Skills (LLS) classroom.
Registrants must be independent. If they typically require 1:1 or additional dedicated support, please reach out and we can introduce you to our Community Integration Pathway. Registration for all new participants will only be confirmed pending an intake assessment with a member of our team (only for those participants who have not previously had an assessment/been a part of TR in Summer).
You may register for one two week block of
TR in the Summer
If interested in additional dates, after the registration start date of May 20th at noon (12 p.m.), families and caregivers are welcome to email therapeuticrecreation@abilitiescentre.org specifying additional block(s) of interest (in order of preference) to be added to a waitlist. If these blocks are not filled, spaces will be released on a first come, first served basis with earlier timestamps receiving first rate of refusal.
The program runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday- Friday, however after-care is also available (until no later than 4:00 p.m.) for those requiring it. This requirement must be communicated to Abilities Centre staff at drop off.
