“Pathways has opened up the virtual world for Derrick. He is now more open and accepting of it because of his experience in this group. Pathways has taught him about the etiquette surrounding this type of meeting with others. His virtual experiences have gone beyond pathways and into church gatherings, a youth group and video calls with others to having medical appointments online. Although Derrick does need facilitation to access the  technology and meeting, once set up for him, he is very good at speaking and expressing himself, not afraid to interact. he now sees himself as a valued participant rather than an observer.

The Pathways staff are exceptional at the their job! We were impressed at how well they intentionally engaged the participants. They expected responses, input and points of view in such a way that the participants could know and appreciate that what they said “mattered and was valued”. The participants were validated. Their voice was important regardless of whether they could speak articulately or not.  I was amazed at how well inclusion, self-advocacy and self esteem skills were amplified and carried out in the Pathways model. Derrick has improved in all of these areas because of Pathways.” – Derrick’s mom, Nell
