Frequently Asked Questions
How long is my JREB approval good for?
Approval is limited to one year for all research projects. Specifically, the expiry date is one year, minus one day, from the final approval date. So, if your research project was approved on May 21, 2022 then the expiry date will be May 20, 2023.

What if my project is not finished after one year? How do I renew my research ethics?
Requests for annual re-approval must be made by completing an annual/continuing approval application form (see ‘Applications and Forms’ section of website) and providing a status report to the JREB. With your submission, please submit a cover letter to the attention of the JREB Chair, the Annual/Continuing Approval Checklist and Form, and the currently approved protocol and consent form(s). 4 weeks prior to study JREB expiry date, please submit an electronic copy to Abilities Research Ethics Department (researchethics@abilitiescentre.org) for approval before submitting to the JREB office. Once signatures are obtained, please send an electronic copy of your renewal request and all supporting documents to REBSubmissions@ontarioshores.ca.

I know that I am responsible for completing an Annual Renewal application, but what if I forget?
Researchers are responsible for ensuring JREB files are kept up to date and that certification is current throughout the study. The JREB Coordinator will send the study PI a reminder letter to submit the annual renewal application at 60 days and at 30 days prior to the study expiry date.

What do I do if I want to make a change to a study after I obtain approval?
All protocol changes, whether major or minor, must be submitted for approval prior to implementation. With your submission, please submit a cover letter to the attention of the JREB Chair, the amendment checklist and report form (see 'Applications and Forms' section of website), and all supporting documents, where applicable. Possible supporting documents include: an amended protocol with track changes and clean copy, amended consent form(s) with track changes and clean copies, and all other amended documents (e.g., recruitment flyers, study questionnaires, etc.). Please submit an electronic copy of the amendment application package to Abilities Centre Research Ethics Department (researchethics@abilitiescentre.org) and approval before submitting to the JREB office. Once signatures are obtained, please submit an electronic copy of your amendment request and all supporting documents to REBSubmissions@ontarioshores.ca.

What do I do when my study is completed?
When all study activity is completed, a Final Study Closure Report (see 'Applications and Forms') must be submitted to the JREB Office with an update on study activity. Please submit an electronic copy of your closure report and all supporting documents, if any, to REBSubmissions@ontarioshores.ca.
