WHITBY, ON – Abilities Centre is redefining the future of inclusive fitness with a transformational capital project in partnership with global industry leader, Helsinki University Research (HUR), and Canadian distributor Rockmount Medical Solutions. Launching Fall 2025, this project will bring the world’s largest installation of accessible HUR equipment to Whitby, Ontario.

“This isn’t just about upgrading equipment – it’s about a powerful partnership built on research, wellness, and shared values,” said Michael Cvitkovic, President & CEO of Abilities Centre. “Together with HUR and Rockmount, we’re advancing accessible fitness and rehabilitation for our members, high performance athletes, sports clubs, and community members – right here in Whitby.”

The new HUR Room addresses one of Abilities Centre’s Top Ten Organizational Priorities and marks a historic milestone with the first major capital improvement project in the history of this world-class facility.

Earlier this year, representatives from Abilities Centre were invited to Finland by HUR and Rockmount to experience first-hand how their equipment is transforming health, wellness, and athletic performance around the world. The visit provided an opportunity to explore new technology, deepen research knowledge, and witness the global impact of inclusive, data-driven fitness. The experience helped solidify a shared vision and laid the groundwork for the partnership now underway.

Together, Abilities Centre, HUR, and Rockmount are building a model for what inclusive fitness should look like – grounded in research, powered by technology, and designed for everyone. HUR strength equipment is celebrated for its ability to measure, monitor, and maximize performance. With smart pneumatic (air resistance) systems, real-time metrics, joint-friendly design, and precision resistance adjustments, the technology enhances strength, endurance, balance, and agility – while also lowering injury risk. From high-performance athletes to older adults and everyday users, HUR technology helps people move with confidence, train with precision, and recover with care.

“We are honoured to partner with Abilities Centre on this landmark project,” said Mats Manderbacka, Founder & Chair of HUR Finland. “This will be the largest accessible installation of HUR equipment in the world, and a testament to our shared vision of inclusive, research-driven fitness that empowers people of all ages and abilities.”

Rockmount Medical Solutions, as HUR Canada’s distributor, has taken an active role in the partnership. During National Accessibility Week in May 2025, Rockmount installed a new balance-testing machine at Abilities Centre, which was met with excellent feedback from the community.

“Bringing new HUR equipment to Abilities Centre has shown how transformative this technology can be,” explains David Smith, Founder of Rockmount Medical Solutions. “The response so far, from both members and staff, has been incredible.”

Featuring the largest accessible HUR installation in the world, this project reinforces Abilities Centre’s commitment to redefining how Canadians live, work, and place through innovation, inclusion, and purpose-driven design.
